The American Conservative Union Foundation (ACUF) is the original grassroots conservative organization in the nation. For more than fifty years, ACUF has served as the umbrella organization harnessing the collective strength of conservative organizations fighting for Americans who are concerned with liberty, personal responsibility, traditional values, and strong national defense. Its mission is to unite and mobilize conservatives around the basic tenets of conservatism. ACUF seeks to educate citizens about conservative principles.

The American Conservative Union Foundation seeks to hire a Development Associate. The Development Associate serves as a key member of the development team and is responsible for identifying, building relationships with and managing a portfolio of donors and prospects.

Working in collaboration with ACUF colleagues, board members, and other volunteers, the Development Associate will assist in the development of donor outreach to individuals, foundations and corporations. S/he will also manage a cadre of major gift prospects. As its development program grows, ACUF seeks an energetic, strategic, and self-starter with a passion for liberty and traditional values.

The Development Associate reports to the Director of Development. This position is based in Alexandria, VA.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build and manage a portfolio of prospects capable of supporting ACUF helping them to align their philanthropic goals with ACUF opportunities/priorities
  • Serve as an ambassador of ACUF to all development constituencies, recommending and assisting with programming involving the leadership of the organization
  • Work collaboratively with ACUF development and program staff to design strategies to secure funding for designated priorities, including unrestricted support, CPAC Sponsorships, and other specified priorities
  • Oversee donor stewardship/recognition efforts for select prospects/donors, in collaboration with stewardship colleagues, helping to promote a culture of gratitude among internal and external constituents
  • Effectively utilize the prospect management/tracking system to record prospect/donor activity, foundation and corporate prospecting, grant proposals, and other relevant data in a timely fashion
  • Work with ACUF Events team to design and execute donor cultivation and stewardship events
  • Prepare an annual portfolio plan in consultation with the Director of Development and regularly review top prospect strategies
  • Assist in the development of donor outreach strategies to improve ACUF’s visibility
  • Work with gift processing staff to provide monthly/quarterly income forecasting

  • Skill in successfully managing multiple projects on tight deadlines and under pressure in a dynamic and open environment
  • Unquestionable integrity and commitment to professional ethics, and the ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • A creative, enthusiastic team member with a commitment to the mission of ACUF
  • Ability to travel on a regular basis either locally or on overnight trips typically from one to three consecutive days
  • A Conservative, free market principled mindset
  • Limited need for administrative support and ability to function independently

Education & Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience with fundraising preferred
  • Previous work at a free market, pro-liberty organization preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office applications; working knowledge of Sales Force software highly desirable
