ACU's Statement Demanding Politico & ProPublica Retract Their False Story

The Politico/ProPublica story is malicious and false and we demand a retraction of the false inference that ACU’s leadership is involved with a scam PAC or any kind of inappropriate, unethical or illegal conduct.

We also have no record that anyone from either publication tried to contact anyone currently associated with ACU about this story. If they had, we would have made clear that it appears that a disreputable scoundrel took advantage of lots of people and organizations seven to nine years ago, including former chairman Al Cardenas. Chairman Matt Schlapp and Executive Director Dan Schneider have been serving in their respective positions for over five years and have had no interaction with either the scammer or Al Cardenas whose fumbling leadership resulted in his ignominious departure from the organization.

We are very proud of ACU’s turnaround with the help of a revitalized board, strong supporters, and a talented staff committed to strengthen America. ProPublica and Politico must retract or correct this false story immediately and stop maligning us.
