The Honorable Virginia Foxx
U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce
2176 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Chairwoman Foxx,

On behalf of the American Conservative Union (ACU) and our membership around the country, we write in support of H.R. 4265 – the Sugar Policy Modernization Act – which ensures that the sugar program utilizes market forces, reduces taxpayer liability, lifts restrictions on some domestic sugar, and finally allows for basic free market forces like supply and demand to influence how the program is implemented.

The U.S. Sugar Program has gone without reform for eighty years, for longer than any other government subsidized commodity. The program is outdated, and needs change. H.R. 4265 is the right legislation to implement change.

The bill has bipartisan support in Congress, and this is a program that conservatives have been working to reform for many years, but have been unable to achieve time and again. Now, with H.R. 4265, there is a real opportunity to bring free market principles to how the sugar program operates.

Free markets work best when government doesn’t distort the playing field, and that is why the U.S. Sugar Program needs to be updated. ACU is proud to give our support to the Sugar Policy Modernization Act.
