ACU
Opposes Virginia Tax Hike
Alexandria,
VA –The nation's oldest and largest conservative
grassroots organization issued a statement today opposing the Republican
plan to increase taxes in the state of Virginia.
"Instead
of looking for ways to raise taxes on working families, Republicans
in the Virginia Legislature should heed the example of former Gov.
James Gilmore, who cut taxes and held the line on spending,"
said ACU Executive Director Richard Lessner in a statement issued
today.
"The
fiscal crunch in Virginia has the same root cause as that in many
states: Too much spending, not too little taxes. State spending
continues to skyrocket, producing demands for higher and higher
taxes. Fiscal discipline is needed, not tax increases on Virginia's
hard working families and small businesses.
"Virginia
voters did not elect Republicans to the majority in order for them
to raise taxes," Lessner said. "Indeed, many Republicans
ran on the pledge to hold the line against taxes. Now they're preparing
to betray that pledge.
"It's
time for the GOP in Old Dominion to return to the legacy of Ronald
Reagan, George Allen, Jim Gilmore and President George W. Bush,
and to reject the failed tax-and-spend mantra of the Democrats."
